Kaiser Permanente’s mission is to improve the health of our members AND the communities we serve. Social needs, such as access to food, housing, and employment, are more important today than ever — especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. These challenges have only inspired us to accelerate our efforts to promote health, equity, and social justice across local communities.

Population health

We’re committed to addressing the health inequities of communities in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC

Kaiser Permanente works with local partners to connect underserved populations to much-needed medical, clinical, and social services. We advance better community health through charitable health coverage, medical financial assistance, patient transportation services, and support for community health providers.

How we impact communities

In 2022, we provided $28M in charitable health care services to 11,000+ individuals and their families.

As part of our mission, we treat those who cannot afford quality health care as well as addressing the social determinants of health to help entire communities thrive

Community health

Kaiser Permanente has helped the region adopt healthy public policies and strengthen programs that improve educational outcomes, healthy eating, and stable housing, including:

Tutored and trained nearly 2,500 students, teachers, and staff to boost morale and improve mental health
Provided counseling and support to more than 1,100 low- and moderate-income adults to secure stable housing
Reached over 700 citizens and policymakers with information needed to advocate for policy and zoning changes to support housing, education, employment, and health in local communities

How we impact communities

Good Health & Great Hair program

We partnered with a network of trusted neighborhood barbershops and hair salons to provide critical health and social support services in predominantly Black, historically redlined neighborhoods in West Baltimore, Maryland.

Economic impact

We’re expanding economic opportunities for our neighbors across the region

You’ll find us on the ground in local communities, working to improve financial, career, and educational outcomes for youth and adults. We invest in food distribution, school programming, employment support, career development, and community engagement across the region. This includes helping people gain qualifications for successful careers, providing support for small businesses to sustain operations, and strengthening the economic infrastructure of our communities so more families can thrive.
